...your source for memorable domains

Protecting Your Domain Investment

In this day of rampant Internet growth, many people are sourcing out online business opportunities to create extra income or even to work at on a full-time basis.

One of the first questions that will arise is how to go about protecting your domain investment. This is crucial because you want a catchy and traffic driven name, but you also want it to be protected from thieves.

Work With Trustworthy People

Protecting your domain investment is simple to accomplish from a task perspective. Start by buying your domain name from a reputable source.

A reputable source should never ask you to risk your domain or money for any reason, whether to save a few dollars on an escrow fee or to make registration convenient for you.

Use An Escrow Firm

There is no substitute for having an independent and reputable escrow firm involved in your sale. Having control of your domain before your money is released to the seller is worth every penny of the escrow fee.

Guard Your Registration

Do not allow anyone else to register your domain for you, even if it seems convenient.

If a person other than yourself is listed on your domain's Whois record as the registrant or as the admin, billing, or technical contact, that person can transfer ownership of your domain to another registrant.

Since there is never a need for another person or entity to appear on your Whois record, do not allow that to ever happen!

Better Safe Than Sorry

Whether creating your own personal website or developing a dynamic online business, you do not want to lose the impact of your great, memorable domain name because you didn't protect it.

Protecting your domain investment can be the key to a bright future in these modern times or you can be left out in the proverbial "cold" as the internet progresses.

About URL-Sales

Alan Mennel owns URL-Sales.com, your source for information about protecting your domain investment and about URL-Sales. Hello! I am Alan Mennel, the owner of this site.

My Background

I have been involved in buying and selling for my entire adult life.

Before going into business for myself, I was the Senior Buyer for a regional off-price specialty retailer and then the Director of Materials Management for one of the largest medical specialty groups in the United States.

From July 1999 until February 2004, I owned and operated a successful Internet site until I was diagnosed with a debilitating lung disease. I was then forced to sell my online store because of my illness.

At that time, I had to find a more sedentary occupation for myself. With my experience in Internet commerce, acquiring and selling domains just became a natural progression for me.

Although today I earn commissions from the sale of products and services on a number of my own Internet commerce sites, I earn most of my income from the sale of domains on URL-Sales.com.

The Value Of A Good Domain Name

As the location of your website on the Internet, your domain name should be an extremely valuable Internet property but not all domain names are equally valuable.

The more valuable domains are ones which people can easily remember or which naturally attract people to your site.

Usually these more valuable domains fall into one of three classifications:

  1. a short, easily remembered acronym
    • NYPL.ORG
for The New York Public Library
    • AZLLP.COM
      for Arizona Limited Liability Partnerships

  2. a descriptive word or short phrase
    • COMFORTERS.COM
    • NJGAMBLING.COM
    • SHARKFISHIN.COM

  3. an unusual and very memorable word or phrase
    • AMAZON.COM
    • SABROSO.CO
    • MICROWAVESURFER.COM

Some people value a domain based upon its current traffic alone but, if traffic is generated to the site through temporary links, the traffic (and value) of this domain could fall off considerably within weeks. This is why having a memorable domain is so important.

With a memorable domain name you have the beginning of a brand.

Buying Domains

At this point in the growth of the Internet, we may assume that most valuable domains have already been registered. The last available 4-letter .COM had been registered before the end of 2007.

Today the only way to acquire better quality, valuable domains is to buy them in the domain after-market. The domain after-market is a legitimate market which sold more than $134 million in domains in 2010 and which is growing by a yearly average of 9%.

How do you protect your investment in this market? I recommend that you do the following:

  1. Buy from a trustworthy source.
  2. Always use a reputable escrow firm.
  3. Guard your domain's registration.
Always register your domain yourself and do not list others as contacts on your registration record.
  4. Do your homework before buying your domain.
Make sure that your domain fits your needs.

My Goal

My goal is to acquire memorable, valuable domains and to match and sell those domains to the right customers, those who will most benefit from acquiring them.

Please contact me with any questions or needs that you may have.

I hope to hear from you very soon.

Best Regards,

Alan Mennel
